Passport appointments
You apply and pay on the NIS portal, passportintl.immigration.gov.ng, then book at appointments.immigration.gov.ng and choose Washington DC. The embassy says all passport applicants must be physically present on the appointment date they booked, and can only reschedule after that date has passed. It also says fees are not refundable once an application has been submitted.
The full process is in the guide to renewing a Nigerian passport from the USA.
What to bring for a renewal
- The passport application form, completed online and printed
- The online payment receipt
- The online acknowledgment slip
- Your expired Nigerian passport
- A photocopy of the data page of that passport
- Two current passport-size photographs, preferably with a white background
- a certified, self-addressed prepaid envelope from USPS, UPS or FedEx
This follows the embassy's passport page, which lists extra documents for applicants under 18 and for adults born outside Nigeria.
The same page asks for a return envelope and also sets out a pick-up window: Monday to Friday, 1pm to 2pm, strictly enforced. To pick up, you present your pick-up slip and your expired passport.
Passport fees
| Passport | Embassy fee schedule |
|---|---|
| Five-year passport | $142 |
| Ten-year passport | $242 |
| Administrative charge, all applicants | $50 |
The administrative charge is paid by debit card. Replacing a lost passport carries a penalty fee of $350, by money order or cashier's check only, payable to the Embassy of Nigeria, and needs a police report. When embassy officials travel outside the Washington area with mobile machines, the processing fee is $100 per application, by money order made out to the Embassy of Nigeria.
The embassy says changes or corrections to the data on a Nigerian e-passport can only be made in Nigeria, and the embassy no longer takes such requests.
How long a passport takes
The embassy says collection is about two months after biometric capture, and that it often comes sooner. The NIS service standard for a renewal is 21 days after successful enrolment. Plan around the longer figure.
Renewing without a visit
An embassy notice says the contactless system lets passport renewal applicants capture face and fingerprint biometrics remotely, and the renewed passport is delivered by mail to the address the applicant gives. The embassy's fee table lists a $50 admin fee for a contactless passport. Who qualifies is covered in the USA renewal guide.
Emergency Travel Certificate
The fee is $150, by money order payable to the Embassy of Nigeria, Washington, D.C., and processing takes 7 working days. The certificate is valid for 30 days only and cannot be used to return to the United States. Drop-off and collection is Monday to Thursday, 11:00am to 12:30pm, or you can mail the application to the Consular Section. The documents are listed on the embassy's consular services page.
Other consular fees
| Service | Fee |
|---|---|
| Attestation of citizenship | $100 |
| No-objection statement | $100 |
| Nigerian passport authentication | $100 |
| Authentication of documents | $100 |
| Shipping of human remains | $50 |
| Attestation of life | free |
The embassy says to allow 7 working days for these services.
Visas
An embassy notice says OIS has stopped collecting and submitting visa applications in the United States, and applicants are advised to submit them directly at the Embassy in Washington DC or the consulates in New York or Atlanta until further notice. It adds that passport collection is not permitted at the Embassy, and passports are returned only in the envelope the applicant submits.
Which states the embassy covers

Passport applicants pick their mission when they book, and the missions that take passport appointments in the US are the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, the Consulate General in Atlanta and the Consulate General in New York. See also the New York and Atlanta consulate guides.
