Opening hours

The consulate is closed to applicants on weekends and on both Nigerian and US public holidays.

Passport appointments

You apply and pay on the NIS portal, passportintl.immigration.gov.ng, then book biometrics at appointments.immigration.gov.ng and choose Atlanta. The consulate says walk-ins for biometric enrolment have not been available since 18 April 2022, and applicants without an appointment are turned back. Bring proof of your appointment.

Check your NIN before you apply. The consulate says the arrangement of names and the date of birth on the passport and the NIN must match exactly, and the passport cannot be processed if they differ.

The consulate says cash payments are prohibited, and that all issued passports are mailed in the self-addressed return envelope the applicant submits. The full process is in the guide to renewing a Nigerian passport from the USA.

What to bring for a renewal

This follows the consulate's required documents page, which also lists what first-time applicants, children and people changing a name need.

Renewing without a visit

A consulate notice says passport applicants may either visit the consulate for biometric enrolment or use contactless enrolment in the NIS mobile app, and only renewal applicants over 18 are eligible. People who choose it send the consulate their most recent passport, the application form, the passport payment receipt and a $50 money order for the admin fee addressed to the Consulate General of Nigeria, Atlanta, with a self-addressed return envelope.

How long a passport takes

The consulate's passport page gives two figures: 6 to 12 weeks after biometrics at the moment, and an enhanced e-passport timeline of 6 weeks for a first application and 3 weeks for a renewal. The NIS service standard for a renewal is 21 days after successful enrolment. Plan around the longest.

Emergency Travel Certificate

In Atlanta this is done by post: the requirements are mailed to the Consular Section with a self-addressed next-day delivery return envelope. The fee is $150, by money order. The list of documents is on the consulate's Emergency Travel Certificate page.
