How to renew a Nigerian passport from Canada
You apply and pay online with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), then either attend a biometrics appointment at the High Commission in Ottawa or, if you qualify, enrol contactlessly and post your documents. The High Commission charges a CAD $50 administrative fee on top of the passport fee.

Before you start: your NIN
The High Commission says a National Identification Number (NIN) is mandatory for all passport applications, for both adults and children, and that your full name must match exactly across your Nigerian passport and your NIN. Note that the High Commission does not issue NINs. Its list of enrolment centres covers Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, New Brunswick (Moncton and Saint John), Halifax, GTA East, Brampton, Ottawa, Toronto and Newfoundland.
Renewing in person, step by step
- Apply online. Complete the application on the NIS portal the High Commission links to, passport.immigration.gov.ng. Payment is processed by Innovate 1 Services and stays valid for one year.
- Book your appointment. The High Commission says every applicant must book an appointment online, and each family member receives an individual appointment.
- Pay the administrative fee. It is CAD $50, non-refundable, paid by money order payable to the Nigeria High Commission, Ottawa, or by PayPal.
- Attend in Ottawa. Passport renewal hours are 9:30am to 2:30pm, Monday to Friday, excluding holidays. Phones and bags go in a locker, and only one parent may accompany a minor.
- Wait for the passport by post. It comes back in the envelope you supply. Once the status shows "issued and collected", the passport has been handed to the High Commission's dispatch team, and you should allow two weeks before tracking the return envelope with Canada Post.
On dates, the High Commission says appointments cannot be rescheduled, you cannot attend before your scheduled date, and if you miss it you may come on any later business day with your original appointment slip. Also, if your appointment falls on a Canadian or Nigerian holiday, you attend on the next business day.
What to bring for a renewal
- The completed and printed application form
- The payment confirmation slip
- Your printed appointment slip
- Your expired Nigerian e-passport, the original
- A photocopy of its biodata page
- The receipt for the CAD $50 administrative fee
- a self-addressed Canada Post Express Post envelope, with the tracking and signature on delivery options selected
This follows the High Commission's passport services page. Children under 18 also need a letter of consent signed by the parents, photocopies of the parents' passports (at least one Nigerian), a birth certificate and, where they apply, custody documents.
Renewing without a visit: contactless enrolment
The High Commission says the contactless system is available to eligible applicants: applicants must be 18 or older and their passport must be expiring within six months, and the NIS mobile app is currently Android only. You apply, capture your fingerprints and face, and pay in the NIS mobile app. Afterwards you post the High Commission a CAD $50 money order for the administrative fee, a self-addressed Canada Post Express Post envelope and your old passport.
