You need an appointment

The High Commission's public notice says each applicant must have an appointment of their own, and people without an appointment will not be seen. Passports and citizenship have separate booking pages: passport appointments and citizenship appointments. The notice asks you to book using the Microsoft Edge browser.

The exception is notarisation, legalisation and authentication, which are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30am to 11:30am, with no appointment required.

How to pay

The High Commission says qualifying applications are given a reference number that must be used when making the bank payment, and leaving it out delays the application.

Renewing or replacing a passport

Check first whether you can renew online with PICA, Jamaica's passport agency, without going through the High Commission. Its notice says the online service is for people renewing a machine-readable passport who have had no change in name or marital status. The steps are in the guide to renewing a Jamaican passport online.

Through the High Commission, adult renewals may be done through the post or in person by appointment, while minors, first-time adult applicants and people whose passports are lost or damaged must apply in person. Bring original documents, because laminated, photocopied or scanned documents will not be accepted.

If you renew by post, your form and photographs must be certified first, and you enclose a self-addressed registered envelope for the return of your documents. The High Commission's lists of who may certify differ from page to page. Its public notice names a Justice of the Peace, a Notary Public, an attorney-at-law, a medical doctor or a minister of religion authorised to perform marriages. Its renewals page names a Notary Public or Consular Officer, a medical practitioner, a solicitor or lawyer, a minister of religion authorised to perform marriages, a head teacher, a dentist or a bank manager. A notary public, a doctor, a lawyer and a minister of religion appear on every list we found.

How long a passport takes

Emergency certificates

If you have to travel before a passport can be issued, the High Commission can issue an Emergency Certificate to a Jamaican citizen. It says to allow at least five business days when you apply at the High Commission, or 10 to 14 working days by post, and that in-person applications should not be submitted earlier than two weeks before the date of travel, and postal applications should be made at least three weeks before it. An FAQ on the same website gives a shorter time for a child's emergency travel document: approximately 3 working days.

Citizenship by descent

Applications are made in person at the High Commission, by appointment, and the fee is £107 for adults and minors. The High Commission says citizenship and passport applications will not be processed at the same time: the Certificate of Citizenship has to be issued before you can apply for a passport.

Who qualifies and which documents you need are in the guide to Jamaican citizenship by descent.

Visas and notarisation

For visas, the High Commission says visa applications are sent through the post by recorded delivery and take a minimum of 20 business days to process after they are invoiced.

Notarisation costs £15 per signature plus administrative fees, and you must show valid photo ID.

Common questions

Can I walk in without an appointment?

Not for passports or citizenship. The High Commission says each applicant must have an appointment of their own, and people without an appointment will not be seen. Notarisation is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30am to 11:30am, with no appointment required.

Can I pay by cash or card?

Cash, cheques, postal orders and credit cards are not accepted. The High Commission's pages disagree about debit cards, so be ready to pay by bank transfer with the reference number it gives you.

Can I hold a Jamaican and a British passport?

Yes. PICA's FAQ states that Jamaica recognizes dual citizenship.
